Wegovy tablets are not ordinary tablets. They contain semaglutide, a medicine that is difficult for the body to absorb through the stomach, and they use SNAC technology to help the medicine reach the bloodstream when taken by mouth.
That is why the way you take the tablet matters. Wegovy pill is designed to be taken once daily, on an empty stomach, swallowed whole with a small amount of water, and followed by a waiting period before food, drink, or other oral medicines.
It should not be cut, crushed, chewed, or split to make a pack last longer. Doing that may affect how the tablet works and could mean you are not taking the medicine as prescribed.
This article explains what SNAC technology does, why the daily routine matters, and why stretching tablets over extra days is not a safe way to manage cost, side effects, or supply.
This content is for general education only. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine and is not suitable for everyone. Always follow the instructions from your prescriber, pharmacist or nurse, and read the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with your medicine.
SNAC stands for salcaprozate sodium. It is included in Wegovy tablets to help semaglutide survive long enough in the stomach to be absorbed.
The official Wegovy pill patient website explains that SNAC helps protect semaglutide from acid and enzymes in the stomach and temporarily increases local absorption through the stomach lining. It also states that without SNAC, almost none of the medicine would be absorbed from the pill, so there would be no treatment effect.
In plain English: SNAC is part of what makes a semaglutide tablet possible.
That does not mean the tablet works however you take it. The tablet, fasting window, water amount and waiting period all belong to the same routine.

Some medicines are absorbed easily through the stomach or gut. Semaglutide is different. It is a peptide medicine, and peptide medicines can be broken down before enough of the active ingredient is absorbed.
Wegovy tablets are designed around this problem. The SNAC ingredient helps create the right conditions near the tablet, but the patient still needs to take it correctly.
According to the official Wegovy pill patient website, the tablet should be taken:
This routine helps the medicine absorb properly. Taking it with food, too much liquid, or other oral medicines too soon may affect absorption.
Wegovy pill is designed as a once-daily treatment. Taking it daily helps you follow the dosing plan set by your treatment provider.
The daily routine also makes the tablet different from the weekly injection. The injection is designed around a weekly schedule. The pill is designed around a daily fasting-and-absorption routine.
Skipping days deliberately, taking half tablets, or stretching one pack over a longer period is not the same as following a prescribed treatment plan. If the dose, cost, side effects, or supply are a problem, the right next step is to speak with your treatment provider rather than changing the schedule yourself.
No. Wegovy tablets should not be cut, crushed or chewed.
This is not just a neatness instruction. The tablet is designed to deliver semaglutide with SNAC technology. Cutting or crushing it may interfere with the way the medicine is released and absorbed.
It can be tempting to split tablets for practical reasons:
Do not do this. If the treatment is not affordable, side effects are difficult, or the dose feels too strong, speak to your treatment provider. They can advise whether your dose plan should be reviewed, delayed, changed, or stopped.
Splitting Wegovy tablets to stretch treatment over more days may seem harmless, but it creates several problems.
First, it means you are no longer taking the medicine as prescribed. Prescription weight-loss treatment should be monitored, especially when dose escalation, side effects and medical suitability are involved.
Second, cutting the tablet may affect absorption. Wegovy tablets are designed to be swallowed whole, and the SNAC technology is part of that design.
Third, stretching doses can make it harder for your treatment provider to understand what is happening. If you have side effects, no response, or inconsistent progress, they need to know how you are actually taking the medicine.
Finally, changing the routine can create false confidence. A patient may believe they are still "on Wegovy" while not following the dosing plan that was assessed and prescribed.

If you miss a dose, do not take two tablets at once to make up for it.
The official Wegovy pill patient website advises skipping that day's dose and taking the next dose at your regular time the following day. If you are worried about a missed dose, speak with your treatment provider.
One missed dose is different from deliberately spreading tablets across extra days. A missed-dose instruction is there to help you respond safely when life gets in the way. It is not a plan for changing your treatment schedule.
Tell your treatment provider.
The official Wegovy pill patient website explains that your provider may decide to lower to a previous dose or delay increasing your dose until symptoms are better. This is exactly the kind of decision that should be made clinically, not by cutting tablets yourself.
Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain, headache, indigestion, and feeling weak or tired. Some side effects can be serious, and a full list of side effects, warnings and precautions should be checked in the Patient Information Leaflet.
Seek urgent medical advice if symptoms are severe or worrying, such as severe persistent stomach pain, symptoms of an allergic reaction, or sudden changes to eyesight.
Side effects can also be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Speak to your provider before changing anything.
It is understandable that cost, availability, and treatment continuity matter. But cutting tablets or taking them less often than prescribed can make the treatment less reliable and harder to monitor.
Your provider may be able to discuss:
The key point is simple: do not create your own dosing plan with a medicine that has been prescribed for you.

Wegovy pill does not need to be taken at the exact same clock time every day. The official Wegovy pill patient website says the key is taking it after a recommended fasting period of at least 8 hours, on an empty stomach, before your first meal or drink of the day.
Helpful habits may include:
The official patient site also advises storing tablets in the original package to protect them from light and moisture and not removing tablets from the blister in advance.
Wegovy pill uses SNAC technology to help semaglutide absorb through the stomach. Without SNAC, almost none of the medicine would be absorbed from the pill.
Because of this, the routine matters. The tablet should be taken once daily, on an empty stomach, after the recommended fasting period, with no more than 120 ml water, and followed by at least 30 minutes before food, drink, or other oral medicines.
Do not cut, crush, chew, or split Wegovy tablets. Do not stretch tablets over extra days to manage cost, side effects, or supply.
If the treatment routine is difficult, or if you are considering changing how you take Wegovy, speak to your prescriber, pharmacist or nurse first.
